Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene (and dental therapist)

We offer dental hygiene appointments as part of your membership. so that your teeth and gums stay clean and healthy. Please ask us if you’d like to book in for an appointment. If you are looking for a dental hygienist, we highly recommend our dental therapist, Robyn Gibson. A dental therapist has enhanced knowledge and training (compared to a dental hygienist) and is therefore able to deliver an outstanding service for our patients.

Why is are dental hygienists so important?

Our dental therapist (and dental hygienist), Robyn, plays just as important a role in looking after your teeth as our dentists do. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth as you get older.

For many people, an appointment with a dental hygienist means a professional tooth clean known as a scale and polish. Even if you have an excellent home brushing and flossing routine, you are likely to have areas in your mouth which are hard to reach. It is here that plaque and tartar can build up. A professional scale and polish will remove traces of both tartar and plaque, which are major causes of gum disease, dental decay, and tooth loss.

Robyn is also particularly good a removing common stains from the teeth. This can really brighten up your smile without the need for teeth whitening treatments.

Our approach to gum disease

Gum disease is relatively common occurring in 10 – 15% of us. However, it is often not diagnosed until the more advanced stages.  As such, our practice screens for gum disease at every oral health assessment, so that a preventative approach can be employed.

As the gums are the foundation of your teeth it is critical that they remain healthy; more teeth are lost to gum disease than dental decay.  It is also crucial that the gums are in the best health possible before any more advanced restorative dentistry can be carried out.

Our Dental Therapist, Robyn Gibson, looks after patients who have any gum disease.  Her skills go beyond those of a standard dental hygienist. She works closely with your dentist to ensure the care is tailor-made to suit individuals’ needs and may involve maintaining them with debridement (gum irrigation) or can involve deeper measurements of all your gums followed by deeper root debridement.  Robyn also has an important role in implant maintenance and works closely with the implant team.
